Sphera and Eastman Collaborate on Life Cycle Analysis Software for Chemical Manufacturing

LCA Automation for chemical manufacturing will allow companies to calculate the environmental footprint of their entire portfolio in an accelerated, transparent and scalable way

CHICAGO, November 8, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Sphera, a leading global provider of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance and risk management software, data and advisory services, today announced that Longtime Eastman, an innovative global specialty materials company, has collaborated with the company on the next iteration of Sphera’s Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) automation software.

Earlier this year, Sphera launched its next-generation LCA automation solution that enables companies to quickly receive global, real-time analysis and environmental footprint insights from their product portfolios and seamlessly integrates transparent to their existing systems. Sphera’s LCA Automation tool will help companies more effectively reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at every stage of production, from design to assembly.

The next phase of LCA Automation will meet the complex needs of the chemical industry. With the multitude of industries that chemical companies supply and the increased focus on sustainability, there is increasing pressure from Eastman’s business partners to provide transparency on the environmental profile of all their products. However, carbon footprint calculations are particularly complex in the chemical industry, as manufacturers must consider the carbon footprint of the raw materials they purchase, as well as the manufacturing process (e.g. reactions, transformations) . The manufacturing process is unique for each product and can include dozens of steps, each with its own impact on the environmental footprint. In addition, collecting data from all systems involved in the production process of each product is necessary to obtain a complete environmental footprint.

“We are thrilled to have Eastman as a collaborator,” said mike zamis, product manager of Sphera. “Having a customer with a shared commitment to sustainability and deep industry expertise provides valuable insights at this early stage will help ensure that LCA Automation for the Chemical Industry has the functionality needed for calculations Reliable LCAs Helping customers calculate product sustainability based on scientific environmental data and reliable methodologies is essential to our mission to create a safer, more sustainable and more productive world.”

Jason PierceSenior Technical Leader, LCA and Circular Economy at Eastman, added, “Sustainability is an integral part of Eastman’s strategy and we are honored to work with Sphera on LCA Automation functionality for our industry. It’s exciting to be on the cutting edge of technology that enables the scaling of product carbon footprint and comprehensive LCA data across our entire global portfolio. This enables better support for our customers and accelerates our industry’s progress towards ambitious climate goals.

For the next phase of development of this solution, Sphera invites companies in the chemical industry to participate in a focus group to ensure that the LCA automation solution for chemical companies will meet the needs of their organization. Learn more about joining the Discussion group.
